Walks along the Isar
While the Isar invites you to swim and relax in summer, it is perfect for beautiful walks in the fall. The colorful trees are reflected in the water and the crowing birds make their rounds above. With a coffee to go in your hand and a nice companion, whether friends, family or a first date, you can take a leisurely stroll, enjoy the view and have interesting conversations.
If you fancy turning your walk into a short hike, you can take a look at this route here. The starting point at Brudermühlstraße can be reached by public transport. You can also find directions from the Altstadt -Lehel here.
Visit the English Garden
The English Garden is a highlight at any time of year and if you can't get enough of autumnal nature, you should definitely stop by. Especially in the northern part of the park, you can enjoy the peace and quiet and take some time out. But there are also some hot spots to discover. The Monopteros is located on a hill in the middle of Munich's green lung. The circular temple is a highlight in the English Garden and gives you a great panoramic view of the city! Things get exciting at the famous Eisbach wave! Equipped with a surfboard and wetsuit, brave surfers take to the cold water - even in the fall!
Go to the Kirchweihdult
From October 19-27, you can visit the Kirchweihdult, also known as the Auer Dult. There you will find antiques, wickerwork, toys, spices, traditional costume accessories, fairground rides and a musical program. Grab your loved ones and take a leisurely stroll around Mariahilfplatz and enjoy both sweet and savory delicacies. This is a great fall activity in Munich, especially with children.
Enjoy onion tart and Federweißer wine
If you still need a culinary tip for fall in Munich, you should definitely try onion tart and a glass of Federweißer (white wine)! You can enjoy this on the roof terrace or directly in the Deutsche Eiche restaurant, for example. They are offering the warm onion tart from the tray and the glass of Federweißer until October 25, 2024.
Address: Hotel Deutsche Eiche, Reichenbachstrasse 13, 80469 Munich
Directions: U2 Fraunhoferstraße, Tram 17 Reichenbachplatz
You can also get delicious onion tart and Federweißer at the Naturfreundehaus Bootshaus München. There is also a nice playground and a large play area next to the beer garden. So children will also feel at home there. Note: They are only open in good weather. Conveniently, you can also combine it with a visit to Hellabrunn Zoo, which is located nearby.
Address: Zentralländstr. 16, 81379 Munich-Thalkirchen
Directions: U3 Thalkirchen
Take a tour with Herz und Heimat Stadtführungen
Our partner Herz und Heimat Stadtführungen particularly recommends their tour “Von braven Bürgern und wilden Vorstädtern” in the fall. This tour starts at Marienplatz or Sendlinger Tor. During the tour, they explain what the “good citizens” were all about and tell you what happened in the city when the city gates were closed.
You will see the last remains of the second ring of city walls and one of Munich's oldest town houses. The walk also takes you through the former suburb of “Au”. How did the residents of the Au live in comparison to the people of Munich? And what has become of this former social hotspot? The tour lasts around 2.5 hours and ends in front of the Paulaner am Nockherberg, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and drink afterwards.
Stroll around the old south cemetery
You can also take a particularly beautiful walk through the old southern cemetery. The colored foliage around the gravestones creates a cozy, autumnal atmosphere. If you keep your eyes open, you can discover the graves of Munich personalities such as Klenze, Kaulbach, King Ludwig I and Hauberrisser. Incidentally, no one is buried there nowadays. The cemetery is a listed building and is actually used more as a park for walks and as a place of rest. If you dare, you can still stop by on Halloween 😉
Address: Old South Cemetery, Thalkirchner Str. 17, 80337 Munich
Directions: U1,U2,U7 Sendlinger Tor
