Getting Around with the CityTourCard: Zones and modes of transportation

The Munich CityTourCard is valid on all modes of transportation in the MVV network: subway, commuter rail, tram, and bus, as well as on some regional transit services within the selected fare zone. Depending on the zone you’ve booked, your ticket allows you to travel to:

  • the entire Munich metropolitan area (Zone M),
  • the Munich suburbs, including the airport (Zone M-6), or
  • additionally, the Bavarian Oberland as far as Lake Tegernsee, Lake Chiemsee, Bad Tölz, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and many more (Zone M-12)

You can buy your ticket conveniently online, on your mobile device using the transit companies’ apps, or in person at ticket machines and customer service centers.

Children 5 and under ride for free on the MVV network. Children 6 and older need their own ticket, but two children between the ages of 6 and 14 count as one person on a group ticket. Dogs also ride for free on public transportation. For the second dog and any additional dogs, you’ll need a ticket at the child fare.

When does the CityTourCard become valid after activation?

  • Your online or mobile ticket is valid starting exactly at the time you selected (for hourly tickets) and on the date you chose.
  • For paper tickets purchased from a ticket machine or at a customer service center, the ticket becomes valid only after it has been validated.
  • The 24-hour and 48-hour passes are valid for 24 or 48 consecutive hours, respectively, starting from the time of validation.
  • For multi-day passes (3 to 6 days), the day of validation counts as the first full calendar day; the validity period covers the number of selected calendar days, including up to 6:00 a.m. of the following day.

How do I activate the discount card, step by step?

The activation process varies depending on the purchase channel: Online tickets do not require separate activation, but you must validate paper tickets yourself.

  1. Buy a ticket: Online at the CityTourCard Shop, through the transit companies’ apps (DB Navigator, München Navigator, MVGO), or at a ticket machine or customer service center operated by MVG, S-Bahn München, or BRB
  2. Set the start time: When purchasing online, you choose the date and, if applicable, the time yourself. The card is then automatically valid starting at that time
  3. Receive your ticket: When purchasing online, you’ll receive it via email as a PDF; when purchasing via an app, it’s available directly in the app; when purchasing at a ticket machine, you’ll receive a printed paper ticket
  4. Validate your paper ticket: Before your first ride or your first visit to a partner attraction, you must validate the paper ticket at a validator located at train stations, on buses, or on trams
  5. Have your ticket ready: You must be able to show your valid ticket during inspections on local transit and when redeeming partner discounts. For online tickets, you must also present a photo ID

What is the most common mistake made during activation?

The most common mistake is failing to validate the paper ticket before the first trip or entering the wrong date or time when purchasing online. Neither of these can be changed after purchase: It is not possible to correct the information or cancel the ticket afterward. Therefore, carefully review your entries before completing the purchase and validate your paper ticket immediately before your first trip.

For tickets purchased through GetYourGuide or Klook, the most common mistake is trying to show the voucher or QR code from GYG or Klook, or attempting to scan or redeem the QR code at ticket machines. That won't work. You'll receive your ticket via email or through the GYG chat, where you can download it.

Presenting a voucher is considered traveling without a valid ticket and results in a €60 fine. You may present a valid ticket afterwards, but you will still have to pay a €7 processing fee.

Can I buy the CityTourCard at Munich Airport?

Yes, the Munich CityTourCard is available right at Munich Airport: at the ticket machines and the Munich S-Bahn customer service center.

For the airport transfer, you’ll need at least the Munich CityTourCard for fare zone M-6, since the airport is located outside the city center’s M zone. From the airport to the city center, the S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 take you directly to the main train station or Marienplatz.

Practical Tips for Buying Tickets at the Airport

If you buy your ticket online before your trip — for example, in the CityTourCard Munich online shop or through the transit companies’ mobile apps — you’ll save yourself a trip to the ticket machine after landing and can head straight to the S-Bahn.

When purchasing online, you set the date and, if applicable, the time yourself, so that the ticket’s validity begins exactly when you’re scheduled to arrive. Be sure to allow for a realistic buffer in case of delays, as you cannot change the start time after the fact. If you’re unsure of your arrival time, it’s better to buy your ticket on-site at a ticket machine or at the customer service center.

What makes the Munich CityTourCard such a great deal?

The combination of unlimited travel on the MVV network and discounts extending far beyond Munich’s city limits is especially worth exploring. With the M-12 fare option, you can also reach the Bavarian Oberland, including Tegernsee, Schliersee, Chiemsee, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There, you’ll also benefit from discounts offered by partners such as mountain railways and open-air museums. It’s worth a second look for locals, too: With the CityTourCard München Light, you can rediscover hidden gems and lesser-known museums and experiences right in your own city.
