Hiking trip to the Wallberg

There are many opportunities to go hiking in the surrounding area from Munich. But if you drive a little further out, you will find one of the best and most beautiful mountains for hiking at Tegernsee - the Wallberg. Just over an hour away, you can take the RB57 from Munich Central Station to Tegernsee station. From there, all you have to do is take the RVO bus 9556 in the direction of Wildbad Kreuth to the Wallbergbahn stop in Rottach-Egern.

In this article, you can find out why a visit to the summit is a "must-do" in the Bavarian Oberland.

The Wallberg as a destination in summer

With plenty of sunshine and blue skies, it is particularly good to climb the summit. But it shouldn't be too warm either, because a mountain hike like this can make you break out in a sweat. The ascent from the valley station is an easy hike with a moderately difficult ascent to the summit. You should allow around 2:30 hours for the ascent and 2:15 hours for the descent. Alternatively, you can get up the mountain from the Wallbergmoosalm in just 1:45 hours and down again in around 1:30 hours.

Both on the way and at the top, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Setzberg, Risserkogel, Roßstein and Lake Tegernsee! You can find various routes with detailed descriptions here.

Relax on the sun terrace of the panorama restaurant. Here you can fortify yourself for the descent and enjoy a cool drink. In summer, there are also lots of paragliders and hang-gliders out and about - maybe you'll spot them 😉

Tobogganing fun in winter on the Wallberg

The Wallberg not only has a lot to offer in summer, but is also a great place to visit in winter. With more than six kilometers, Germany's longest natural toboggan run awaits numerous visitors! However, it is not suitable for small children and is quite challenging. Skiing and snowboarding is also possible on the Wallberg through the Erlen- and Glaslhang, but only for "professionals" as the route is very demanding. Furthermore, the ski lifts are no longer in operation.

The view from the Wallberg with its snowy landscape is at least as beautiful as in summer with sunshine and green nature. You can hike in both summer and winter. Always check the weather conditions here. That way, you can be sure that you really will find a beautiful view from the mountain. Routes for winter hikes can be found here.

Wallberg Cable Car

You don't necessarily have to be active to enjoy the view on the Wallberg. The Wallbergbahn takes you safely up the mountain and back down again in around 15 minutes. Please note that although the valley station is barrier-free, the mountain station is not. A few hundred meters away, you will find the Wallberg-Kircherl, the over hundred-year-old landmark.

By the way, with the CityTourCard Munich you get a €1.50 discount on the ascent and descent *.

*only applies to the combination of ascent and descent
