As early as 1886, the chronicle of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof mentions the first cultural events. Which were abruptly ended by the destruction of Munich in 1944. The mother of the hotel owner of many years, Falk Volkhardt; who was a celebrated singer, had a concert hall built after the reconstruction of the hotel. Falk Volkhardt continued the cultural tradition of the family and commissioned the government architect Dr. Erwin Schleich to design the present theater. It was reopened on October 31, 1961, under the direction of Gerhard Metzner, and celebrated its 50th birthday on October 31, 2011. The hotel is still family-owned and managed by Innegrit Volkhardt.

The theater, elegantly renovated by Margit Bönisch, with its luxurious surroundings, offers a wide range of performances: comedies, musical comedies, plays, revues. Stars like Hans-Jürgen Bäumler, Matthieu Carrière, Joachim Fuchsberger, Herbert Herrmann, Heiner Lauterbach, Michaela May, Angelika Milster, Uwe Ochsenknecht, Georg Preusse, Simone Rethel, Friedrich von Thun, Saskia Vester or Peter Weck have been guests here.

The Kömodie im Bayerischen Hof has 570 seats, 403 of which are in the parquet, 137 on the central balcony, and 30 on the side balconies. It is the third-largest theater in Munich.
