The Space for Development
Art and culture lie at the very heart of Munich’s Werksviertel-Mitte district. The whiteBOX is a vibrant component of the location’s DNA. For the past five years and under the artistic direction of Martina Taubenberger, it has revealed its true colours as a highly unconventional, courageous and accessible art and cultural centre – not only to audiences here in Munich and Germany, but also internationally. In March 2021, the whiteBOX was renamed the Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst in order to better meet and reflect the growing demands of the urban space it calls home. This rolls out the concept of the former whiteBOX even further into the area and loosely positions it in the burgeoning Werksviertel neighbourhood.
Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst meeting place for artists
Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst is not a museum. But it is also not just a meeting place for artists, residents of the Werksviertel, culture hungry visitors, media representatives from all over the city and beyond, but instead regards itself as a platform and stage for outstanding budding initiatives, projects, concepts and ideas from all over the world. Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst presents creative contemporary formats far removed from the realm of the familiar and ordinary. In future, its programme of events will delve even deeper into the topics of art and urban space (development), art and public space, art and society, art and the digital world – all this with a hitherto unrivalled level of intensity and diversity. The focus therefore always revolves around the artistic exploration of the industrial, historical and architectural legacy of the Werksviertel, along with its communal and social spaces.
For "Old hands" and Newcomer
Around 30 visual artists from all disciplines ply their creative trade in the Werksviertel-Mitte and are supported by the non-profit limited company. This includes ‘old hands’ who have had a studio on the premises for up to 20 years, along with young up-and-coming artists. As part of its artists-in-residence programme, the Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst also invites creators from other cities and countries to temporarily relocate their studio to the Werksviertel. Art is lived in Werksviertel-Mitte Kunst – every day
