S-Bahn Birthday Tour Day 2: Historical Tour
Munich can do even more than just Nymphenburg Palace…
The second stop on our birthdayTOUR takes us to places that have a special historical background in Munich. Even though there may not have been an S-Bahn back then, these places can all be reached very easily by S-Bahn.
Marienplatz: S-Bahn Stop Marienplatz
Marienplatz is the center of the Bavarian capital. It is the intersection of the east-west axis between Isartor and Karlstor and the south-north axis between Sendlinger Tor and Schwabing. There is a lot to see here:
Rathaus-Glockenspiel (There is a viewing platform in the Rathaus tower, below which the historic carillon rings twice a day)
Frauenkirche (The cathedral "Zu Unserer Lieben Frau" is the unmistakable landmark of the city of Munich).
Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial: Dachau S-Bahn Stop
March 22, 1933, the Nazi regime opened a concentration camp on the site of the disused Dachau Royal Bavarian Powder and Ammunition Factory. The place of imprisonment and terror existed for twelve years. More than 200,000 prisoners from over 40 nations were imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp and its satellite camps, and at least 41,500 people died there. Thanks to the initiative of survivors who joined together in 1955 to form the Comité International de Dachau (CID), the former prisoner camp was transformed into a place of remembrance and commemoration.
