"The Summit lust in the big city"

In the heart of Munich, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of mountains—a fascinating journey through the past, present, and future of mountain sports and alpine passion. The modernized, historic museum building in the middle of Prater Island invites visitors to explore and relax. Since 1911, the museum has been located in the old villa in the middle of the Isar River and offers the opportunity to learn about mountains and everything beyond.

“That's why mountains” and current topics

The newly designed permanent exhibition “Darum Berge” (That's Why Mountains) opened in 2024. For over 150 years, people have been drawn to the mountains because they are fascinated by them. The permanent exhibition uses inclusive and interactive multimedia stations to explore why people are particularly enthusiastic about mountains and what motivates them. People, images, and objects tell stories in five thematic areas: thirst for adventure, physical sensation, achievement, experiencing nature, and community, as well as continuities and breaks.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum offers regular special exhibitions on current topics such as the impact of global warming on the Alps. Lectures, readings, discussions, guided tours, and museum educational programs for all age groups take visitors on an interactive journey through the Alps.

An urban oasis: the museum grounds on Prater Island

The Alpine Museum is located on Prater Island, surrounded by the Isar River. With its natural ambience and adjacent garden, it offers an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. With the old Höllentalangerhütte hut, the 30-square-meter Alpine relief and a small botanical garden, the outdoor facilities themselves are a highlight and complement the exhibitions with a touch of spirit of discovery. You can take a pleasant break in the museum's own Café Isarlust under old chestnut trees and listen to the murmur of the Isar.

Library and Archives

The library invites young and old alike to browse and plan their next mountain tour. It houses current guidebooks, children's books, and novels, as well as more than 70,000 media items on the topics of mountaineering, mountains, and mountain sports.

The German Alpine Club's archive collects photographs, posters, and other objects relating to the history of the Alpine Club and mountaineering. The archive material can be researched online or viewed on site by appointment.
