Landsberg am Lech – one of Bavaria's most livable cities

Landsberg consistently ranks among Germany’s top regions in terms of happiness and quality of life: the Bavarian “dolce vita”—something the people of Landsberg have known for a long time. But as you stroll through the city, this quickly becomes clear to every visitor.

The exceptionally well-preserved Old Town is bursting with joie de vivre. Around every corner, you’ll find cozy cafés, small shops to browse, and inviting restaurants. Here, historic buildings aren’t just a backdrop—they’re a vibrant part of the city’s colorful life.

The Historic Town Hall – Landsberg am Lech’s Landmark

The most beautiful building on the square is, without a doubt, the Historic Town Hall, a masterpiece of world-class architecture. With its opulent Rococo façade, it immediately captures everyone’s attention. Dominikus Zimmermann, the architect behind the famous Wieskirche, designed it long ago.

The Historic Town Hall is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings, and not just from the outside. As soon as you step inside its historic walls, the elaborate stucco work by Dominikus Zimmermann on the ground floor is sure to impress.

The historic furnishings of the rooms on the upper floors reflect the city’s eventful history, including, in the Herkomer Hall, the work of the former councilors depicted in the monumental paintings by Sir Hubert von Herkomer. In the ballroom on the top floor, where the popular Town Hall concerts take place, visitors can admire four large wall frescoes depicting highlights of Landsberg’s history.

During a guided tour of the city, visitors also have the opportunity to explore the basement of the Historic Town Hall, which as early as the 16th century housed a detention cell and a wine cellar.

Other Attractions in Landsberg am Lech

The imposing town church, numerous colorful townhouses, and medieval fortifications are just a few more examples of the town’s rich history.

Enjoy Leisure and Nature Along the Lech River

After taking in some culture, you might want to enjoy a drink by the rushing Lechwehr or visit the beer garden, which is also located right on the river. From there, it’s just a stone’s throw to the “Pössinger Au” floodplains of the Lech. Children love the free-roaming fallow deer. Alternatively, canoeing or stand-up paddleboarding tours on the Lech, as well as numerous activities for hikers and cyclists, are sure to appeal.
