With around 350,000 visitors a year, the Kunsthalle München is one of the most renowned exhibition venues in Germany. Located in the heart of Munich's city center, it hosts three major exhibitions a year on a wide range of topics, from painting, sculpture and graphic art to photography, crafts, design and fashion. Monographic exhibitions and thematic projects alternate, but interdisciplinary approaches also find their place in the versatile program of the Kunsthalle München.
Around 1900, young visionary artists in Munich set out to revolutionize art and reform life. At a time of rapid scientific and technical innovations as well as social upheaval, they took part in the search for a more just and sustainable way of life. They turned away from historical models to find a new art that would permeate life down to the smallest detail, and their ideas and designs formed the basis for modern art and design. With objects from the arts and crafts, sculpture, painting, graphic art, photography, fashion and jewelry, the exhibition sheds light on Munich's role as the cradle of Art Nouveau in Germany and shows how topical the issues of life discussed at the time still are today.
Art Nouveau. In ten chapters, Made in Munich presents the pioneering ideas and sources of inspiration from which the artists who trained or worked in Munich developed their respective styles. Aspects such as gender equality, a healthy life in harmony with nature and the democratization of art and society form the backdrop against which the tour unfolds.
