Erwin Olaf. Unheimlich schön (incredible beautiful)

In the Netherlands, Erwin Olaf (*1959) is one of the most famous contemporary artists. Now Kunsthalle München is dedicating the first comprehensive solo exhibition in Germany to him. Selected photographs, short films, sculptures, and multimedia installations from over forty years of work show Olaf’s development from an analog to a digital artist, from the rebellious photojournalist of the 1980s to the sophisticated storyteller of the 2000s.
For his pictures, Olaf creates a world that is staged down to the smallest detail, which looks confusingly similar to ours but appears enigmatic due to its artificiality. With their aesthetics borrowed from the film and advertising industries, are only superficially immaculately placative; in fact, they deal with questions of democracy, equality, or self-determination. Olaf uses clichés and stereotypes to question the power of images in our society – sometimes humorously, always aesthetically, never well-behaved …
Live digital tours of the exhibition’s 360° tour will now be available via Zoom during the lockdown. From March 4, the digital tour will also be accessible to individual users* free of charge.
