The Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and the Kunstbau

It is almost 100 years since the city of Munich acquired the historic villa of the "prince of painters" Franz von Lenbach on Königsplatz and opened it to visitors as the Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus in 1929.

World's largest collection of the Blue Rider at the Lenbachhaus

Both the main building, which was renovated by Foster + Partners between 2009 and 2013 and the adjacent art building are considered icons of their time by architecture lovers. Thanks to an extensive donation from Gabriele Münter in 1957, the museum achieved world renown and today houses the world's largest collection of the Blue Rider with numerous works by Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc, and Marianne von Werefkin. In addition to the historical rooms by Franz von Lenbach, separate parts of the building are dedicated to the 19th century and Joseph Beuys.

Contemporary art, conceptual art, new media

From the 1970s onwards, the museum presented significant trends in Western art in its exhibitions and set new priorities in the area of post-war modernism and contemporary art. The history of conceptual art and the new media, especially video art, as well as the artistic examination of popular themes from Pop Art to contemporary positions also play an important role.

The marvelous garden is open to everyone

A multi-layered history of art can be discovered during a visit. The idyllic garden of the magnificent villa offers a perfect atmosphere to relax with a break in the sun or to chat. During the museum's opening hours, the garden is freely accessible to everyone. Books accompanying the exhibition, posters, postcards, and other souvenirs are available in the shop, which is run by the Walther König bookshop. The restaurant and café Ella offers the opportunity to round off a visit to the museum on a large terrace with a view of the Propylaea and Königsplatz.
