Day trip to Munich: Discover the most beautiful mountain destinations in the Bavarian Oberland
On cloudless days, you can see the mountains clearly from Munich with the naked eye. But why just look at them when you can be right there in the mountains in no time at all?
With the BRB, you can reach the most beautiful viewpoints in the Bavarian Oberland in just 1-1.5 hours from Munich. In this article, you will learn which mountains are worth visiting for a day trip as a family, couple, group of friends, or solo traveler.
- Blomberg
- Brauneck
- Wallberg
- Wendelstein
The Blomberg - Toboggan run in summer and winter
Blomberg is the perfect destination for families with children. From a climbing forest and bike rental to a children's adventure park and toboggan run. From Munich, you can take the RB56 train from Ostbahnhof station towards Lenggries and travel to Bad Tölz. From there, bus 392 towards Kochel will take you directly to the “Blombergbahn” station.
Once at the mountain, you have various hiking routes to choose from, which of course also lead to the summit of the Blomberg. If you don't like hiking, you can take the cable car up and down again later. At the top, you will definitely be rewarded with a great view, and there are of course opportunities for food and drinks.
By the way: there is a summer and winter toboggan run! Fun is guaranteed for young and old in both seasons!
Don't forget to buy a Munich CityTourCard for zone M-6! With the CityTourCard, you can conveniently use public transportation to Blomberg and also get a €2 discount on admission to the climbing forest at Blomberg! The CityTourCard is also available as a group ticket for up to 5 people.

The Brauneck – Lenggries' local mountain
If you take the RB56 train from Munich's Ostbahnhof station to Lenggries and travel all the way to Lenggries, you can visit the local mountain, “Das Brauneck”! The Brauneck delights people in both summer and winter. Similar to the Blomberg, you can hike to the top of the mountain or take the mountain railway up and down. Paragliding and hang gliding from the mountain are particularly popular in summer. So be sure to look up at the sky from time to time, and you're sure to spot a hang glider or two.
In winter, people like to come to Brauneck, mainly to go skiing and snowboarding. There are slopes to suit every taste, and you can also hire equipment on site.
It is also worth purchasing a Munich CityTourCard (Zone M-12) for this trip. You can use public transportation in Lenggries without any problems and also save €1.50 when using the Brauneck mountain cable car!

The Wallberg – Vacation in the mountains
Another mountain that is a great destination for an excursion is the Wallberg. It is located in the vacation region near Lake Tegernsee. The beautiful nature there attracts over 200,000 visitors to the Wallberg every year. From Munich, you can reach the mountain by taking the RB57 to Tegernsee. From there, bus 356 towards Kreuth will take you directly to the Wallbergbahn. You can then take the Wallbergbahn cable car to the top of the mountain in comfort, or use the hiking trails to reach the summit on foot.
Even in winter, the view from the mountain is breathtaking, and skiing enthusiasts can enjoy a beautiful route here.
The CityTourCard also offers a discount of €1.50 for the Wallbergbahn cable car!

The Wendelstein – a mountain with many possibilities
You can visit the Wendelstein from two “sides”: Brannenburg and Bayrischzell. To get from Munich to Brannenburg, you can take the BRB regional train RB54 towards Kufstein. By the way: if you have time, you can also travel to Kufstein in Austria with the CityTourCard Munich (M-12)!
To get to the Wendelstein in Bayrischzell, take the RB55 from Munich towards Bayrischzell and get off at Osterhofen station.
What is the difference between the Wendelstein valley stations in Bayrischzell and Brannenburg?
The difference lies in the transport up and down the mountain. In Brannenburg, the Wendelstein cog railway takes you to the top. We, the CityTourCard editorial team, have already taken the cog railway up the Wendelstein ourselves 😉 The journey takes about 30 minutes and you will be rewarded with a great view along the way!

In Bayrischzell, you will be taken up the mountain by cable car. The cable car is the fastest way to get there, as the journey only takes about 7 minutes. Both cable cars run once an hour, and with the CityTourCard Munich, you can get up to 18% off the ticket for the ascent and descent.

Of course, you don't have to take the mountain railway to get to the Wendelstein. There are various hiking trails available that you can walk at your own pace. Incidentally, there is a lot to discover and experience around the mountain station: from Germany's highest church to the show cave in the belly of the mountain, the Panorama Trail, the observatory, and much more.
